![]() He seems disappointed in his lack of skill and stomach for combat, referring to him mostly as “Boy,” and rarely making eye or physical contact with him. ![]() Kratos loves his son but is cold at first. Here are two people with demonstrably different personalities, one of them young and still innocent, the other old and as blood-soaked as they come, both grieving over the same woman in different ways. That relationship, and how it evolves and changes over the course of the story, is one of God of War’s most captivating qualities. But he is still a stranger to this place, and is forced to rely on the son he barely connects with to decipher its languages and guide him when the swing of an axe or the imprint of his boot on an undead foe won’t do the trick. While that history certainly informs who he is now, the character we encounter here has started a new chapter, having found love, a family, and a full bushy beard in this world of Norse mythology. ![]() If you’ve played the previous games in the series – seven of them, counting two PSP games and one mobile game – you know that Kratos lived a long life of loss, triumph, and plenty of god-killing in ancient Greece. But the story also encompasses an indelible supporting cast, a gorgeous world consistently rewarding to explore, and immensely satisfying combat. It’s all framed by one continuous camera shot that never cuts away or takes the focus off of the heart of it all: Kratos’ relationship with his young son, Atreus. Set in a new, Norse mythology-inspired world and starring a familiar but thoughtfully reimagined character, God of War’s fish-out-of-Greek-water tale is a nonstop whirlwind of emotions. God of War is a masterful composition of exceptional interlocking parts, deliberate in its design and its foreshadowing, which pays off in unexpected ways in both the gameplay and story. That is absolutely true of God of War – its musical score elevates story moments, which flow seamlessly into fantastic action gameplay, which facilitates exploration and puzzles that reward you with a deeper understanding of its characters and its expansive and beautiful world. The Shining, The Social Network, and Jaws are all excellent examples of films made up of strong individual parts complementing each other to form a fantastic work of art. Some of the best films of all time are those whose different strengths all work in concert to create a unified, engrossing whole. ![]()

(Modes = Singleplayer, Multiplayer) As with the original pc release, the pc version of GoW:UE lacks the splitscreen cooperative game mode its console has. The aggravation discouraged me from experimenting with tactics. But to keep up the difficulty, GoW starts throwing enemies that one-shot-kill in the final third, and it’s frustrating to spend 10-20 minutes clearing an area only to be killed in 1 second. Better players charge ahead, worse players take more rest breaks behind cover. (Difficulty Curve = 3) The purpose of recharging health is to allow players to self-calibrate difficulty. DESIGN = 2 (Level Design = 7) I dislike that several levels have you split into left paths or right paths, because you shouldn’t be forced to have to replay a game to see everything. Why not let us switch between all 8 weapons so we’d have options? Other than the submachine gun, weapons all work well: sniper, shotgun, explosive crossbow. Why bother pretending that we have a choice? The Hammer-of-Dawn superweapon takes up the pistol slot, but you only use it 4 times, and each time it’s used once, then replaced. The remaining slot is reserved for the only gun with available ammo, presented lying out in the open when it’s time to switch. There’s no strategy in GoW: 3 of weapons are permanent (the Lancer since it’s better than the submachine gun, the revolver since it’s the best pistol, and the grenades). In Halo it arguably works because there’s some strategy involved in switching mid-battle. ![]() I never liked the Halo-style limit of only carrying 4 guns. I dislike the unreliability of the chainsaw bayonet, which led to dying when it failed to operate on command. I like that it switches to “tank” control (left/right turn instead of strafe) while you hold down “B” for the chainsaw, because it would have been too hard to also move the right joystick with the right hand. The cover-based combat still holds up, I mean, it would have to, right, given that it took over shooters the same Batman:Arkham scheme took over all subsequent melee combat games? Will Anastasia ever be allowed to touch those pecs? Will Christian ever learn to submit? His biological mother, a crack addict, died when he was young, and the cigarette burns alongside his swollen pecs testify to his hard life before Marcia Gay Harden adopted and gave him a taste of wealth. He owns up to having been abused as a child. Christian is still dominant, but he professes a desire to move away from master-slave relationships. It helps that in Fifty Shades Darker the stakes aren’t quite as high. Rumor had it that Johnson and Dornan couldn’t warm up to each other if they were cremated together, but they do a fair job here of looking semi-comfortable. That’s not hard, of course, in scenes like the one where Anastasia begins their reconciliation discussion by announcing, “I’d like to negotiate terms.” Director James Foley once made the film of Glengarry Glen Ross, and he shows some skill in framing every conversation as a negotiation for power. I personally don’t see that as much of a victory for feminism, but then I married an avowed carnivore. For example, when Christian orders two steaks at a fancy restaurant, she interrupts to tell the waiter she’ll have a quinoa salad instead. Now she’s firm in her refusal to let him control everything. You’ll recall that in Fifty Shades of Grey, Anastasia and Christian’s relationship ended when she asked him to show her how far it could go but he was getting off on the pain he inflicted. Not much is left to the imagination with lines like, “I know that I asked you to show me how far it could go, but you were getting off on the pain you inflicted.” Stories of rich men and poor women are staples of our culture, and the S&M milieu of Fifty Shades actually demystifies the subject - it makes the subtext too explicit. It could be The Melania Trump Story if the male were a Cheeto-colored lunatic whose businesses often go under and the woman couldn’t utter a single coherent sentence in English not written by someone else. The movie’s real subject is wealth - and how much a woman is willing to accept being owned in return for beautiful clothes and cars and planes and houses. It does, however, misrepresent itself, which is true of most mainstream American films about sex. ![]() People are calling Fifty Shades Darker the worst movie ever made, but it’s really not that terrible. In 2005, Rubin tried to negotiate deals with Samsung and HTC. Perlman refused a stake in the company, and has stated "I did it because I believed in the thing, and I wanted to help Andy." Steve Perlman, a close friend of Rubin, brought him $10,000 in cash in an envelope, and shortly thereafter wired an undisclosed amount as seed funding. Rubin had difficulty attracting investors early on, and Android was facing eviction from its office space.
